Hans Herzog Spirit of Marlborough Merlot/Cabernet

Review:

Who says you can’t make outstanding claret-style reds in the South Island? Estate-grown on the banks of the Wairau River, matured for at least two years in new and one-year-old French oak barriques, and then bottle-aged for several years, this is typically a densely coloured wine with a classy fragrance, substantial body, and notably concentrated blackcurrant, plum, herb and spice flavours. From a ‘perfect ripening season’, the 2015 vintage (5*) is a blend of equal portions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Still unfolding, it is deeply coloured, with a fragrant, youthful, complex bouquet. A powerful, sturdy red, likely to be very long-lived, it has concentrated, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, firm tannin backbone, and obvious potential for cellaring; best drinking 2025+. Certified organic.
