Te Whau Vineyard Waiheke Island Syrah (2013)

This wine is hand-picked from hill-grown vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for over a year in French oak barrels (50 per cent new in 2013). The 2013 vintage (3.5*) is very rare – only 60 cases were produced. Deeply coloured, it has a slightly rustic bouquet, leading into a mouthfilling wine with generous plum, spice and nut flavours and a distinctly earthy streak. It’s a powerful wine with considerable complexity, but also shows a slight lack of finesse.
