La Michelle (2009)

From Margrain, the classy 2008 vintage (4*) is a lean, lively, bottle-fermented bubbly, blended from Pinot Noir (66 per cent) and Chardonnay (34 per cent), grown in Martinborough and made in an unusually dry style (4 grams/litre of residual sugar). Pale straw, with a scented, yeasty bouquet, showing good complexity, it is vivacious, with strawberry and spice flavours, nutty and yeasty, and a tight, lingering finish. A blend of Pinot Noir (70 per cent) and Chardonnay (30 per cent), the 2009 vintage (3.5*) was disgorged after 30 months on its yeast lees. It’s a crisp and lively wine, with citrusy, slightly biscuity flavours and some yeasty complexity.
