Spy Valley Marlborough Chardonnay (2011)

A consistently attractive, top-value wine. The 2010 (4*) was hand-picked, barrel-fermented and lees-aged for a year, with some use of indigenous yeasts and malolactic fermentation. Mouthfilling, with strong, citrusy, mealy, buttery flavours, firm acid spine and a tight finish, it’s drinking well now. The 2011 vintage (5*) is a wonderful buy. Estate-grown in the Waihopai Valley and the hillside Outpost Vineyard, in the Omaka Valley, it is unexpectedly refined and elegant for a wine in its price category. The bouquet is highly fragrant; the palate is fresh and finely poised, with strong, ripe citrus-fruit and peach flavours, hints of nuts and butterscotch adding complexity, good acid spine and a long, harmonious finish.
