Vidal East Coast Viognier (2010)

A good, well-priced introduction to Viognier. The 2009 vintage (3.5*) is a blend of Gisborne (59 per cent), Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough grapes, partly handled in tanks, but 60 per cent of the blend was fermented and lees-aged for four months in seasoned French oak barriques. A bone-dry style, it’s full-bodied (14.5 per cent alcohol), with gentle acidity, a touch of complexity and good depth of pear and spice flavours, fresh and well-rounded. There is no 2010.
