Puriri Hills Pope (2008)

The very classy debut 2005 vintage (5*) was named after Ivan Pope, who planted and tended the vines at this Clevedon, South Auckland vineyard. Blended from Merlot (47 per cent), Carménère (33 per cent), Cabernet Franc (10 per cent) and Malbec (10 per cent), it has dark colour and a brambly, slightly toasty bouquet. Rich, ripe and highly concentrated, it has hints of coffee and spices, and notable power, complexity and density. The 2008 (5*), made from Cabernet Franc (52 per cent), Merlot (32 per cent) and Carménère (16 per cent), was matured for two years in French oak barriques (80 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is mouthfilling, fresh and supple, with substantial body and deep, lush blackcurrant, herb, spice and nut flavours, framed by fine, silky tannins. Showing lovely richness and texture, it’s already approachable; drink now or cellar.
