Paddy Borthwick Right Hand Wairarapa Pinot Noir (2019)

Estate-grown at Gladstone, this small-volume wine (1450 bottles in 2019) is made by Paddy Borthwick, an 'intuitive, impulsive and thoughtful', right-handed vigneron. The 2019 vintage (5*) was matured for 11 months in French oak casks (40 per cent new). Full-coloured, it is a powerful (14.9 per cent alcohol), yet graceful red, fragrant and savoury, with dense, lush, plummy, spicy flavours, ripe and firmly structured. Set for the long haul, it's well worth cellaring to 2024+.
