La Collina Syrah (2015)

La Collina ('The Hill') is grown at Bilancia's steep, early-ripening site on the northern slopes of Roys Hill, overlooking the Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay, co-fermented with Viognier skins (but not their juice, giving a tiny Viognier component in the final blend), and matured for 20 to 24 months in 85 per cent new (but 'low-impact') French oak barriques. A majestic red, it ranks among the country's very finest Syrahs. The most recent vintage I have tasted is the 2015 (5*). Full-coloured, with a floral, complex bouquet, it is savoury, with strong, ripe, plummy, spicy flavours, fine-grained tannins, and a lasting finish. It should be at its best for drinking from 2021 onwards.
