Who says you can't make outstanding claret-style reds in the South Island? Estate-grown on the banks of the Wairau River, matured for at least two years in new and one-year-old French oak barriques, and then bottle-aged for several years, this is typically a densely coloured wine with a classy fragrance, substantial body, and notably concentrated blackcurrant, plum, herb and spice flavours. The 2014 vintage (5*) is a blend of equal portions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fragrant, with deep, fairly youthful colour, it is sturdy, with concentrated blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, showing excellent ripeness and depth, good complexity, and a well-structured, long finish.
