Showing strong personality, the 2017 vintage (5*) is a declassified year of Esk Valley Heipipi The Terraces (see the Branded Reds section), 'to enjoy while you wait for the greatest vintages . . . to mature'. Matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (50 per cent new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is dark and purple-flushed, with a very fragrant, spicy bouquet. Already approachable, it's a powerful, mouthfilling red, with fresh, dense plum, blackcurrant and spice flavours, complex and savoury, and good tannin backbone.
