Elephant Hill Airavata Hawke's Bay Syrah (2017)

An emerging star. The classy 2017 vintage (5*) was estate-grown and hand-harvested in the Gimblett Gravels, co-fermented with a splash of Viognier (1 per cent of the blend), and matured for 26 months in French oak casks (52 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is rich and smooth-flowing, with concentrated plum, spice and nut flavours, a hint of liquorice, excellent complexity, and a long, very harmonious finish. A wine of rare finesse, it should be at its best 2024+.
