De La Terre Hawke's Bay Montepulciano (2018)

The classy 2018 vintage (5*) is rare, but well worth tracking down. Hand-harvested at Havelock North and matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (40 per cent new), it's a full-coloured, ripely fragrant, sturdy red, fleshy, sweet-fruited and savoury, with generous, plummy, spicy, nutty flavours, showing good complexity. Best drinking 2022+. The 2017 vintage (4.5*) was also matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (40 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is very fresh and vibrant, with good intensity of youthful, strongly spicy flavours, and a fairly firm finish. It should be long-lived; open 2022+.
