Veteran Hawke's Bay winemaker Peter Robertson says the shingly Ohiti Estate, inland from Fernhill, yields 'sound Cabernet Sauvignon year after year – which is a major challenge to any vineyard'. The 2018 vintage (4.5*) was matured for a year in French and American oak barrels (10 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is sturdy, sweet-fruited and firm, with strong, vibrant blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, and good freshness and complexity. Still very youthful, it should be long-lived; open 2022+. A great buy.
