Bell Hill Pinot Noir (2017)

From a small vineyard on a limestone slope at Waikari, inland from Waipara, in North Canterbury, this is a rare, distinguished red. It is typically a generous wine, powerful yet silky, with sweet cherry, plum and spice flavours, complex, very harmonious and graceful. Tasted 'blind' in 2017, the notably powerful 2006 vintage was dark, rich and still in full stride. The most recent vintage I have tasted was the 2011 (5*), in late 2014. Full-coloured, with lovely ripeness and harmony, it was youthful, plummy, spicy and savoury, with excellent complexity, and a very finely textured, long finish.
