Babich The Patriarch (2016)

This is promoted as Babich's greatest red, regardless of the variety or region of origin, but all vintages have been grown in the company's shingly Irongate Vineyard in Gimblett Road, Hawke's Bay (in other words, they have been Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot-based blends, rather than Pinot Noirs from further south). It is typically a dark, ripe and complex, deliciously rich red. The 2016 vintage (5*) is a boldly coloured blend of Merlot (40 per cent), Malbec (33 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (27 per cent), matured for 16 months in French oak barriques. A powerful young wine, it is sturdy, with concentrated, ripe berry, plum and spice flavours, finely integrated oak, good tannin backbone, and obvious potential. Well worth cellaring to 2022+.
