Villa Maria Single Vineyard Braided Gravels Hawke’s Bay Albariño (2017)

Benchmark stuff, the classy 2017 vintage (5*) was hand-picked in the Joseph Soler Vineyard and fermented and lees-aged for a year in a concrete egg. Highly scented, it is medium-bodied, with penetrating, peachy, slightly yeasty flavours, a minerally streak and a crisp, dry (2.2 grams/litre of residual sugar), resounding finish. A distinctive, intensely varietal wine, it should be at its best 2019+.
