Fromm Fromm Vineyard Pinot Noir (2016)

Winemaker Hätsch Kalberer describes this Marlborough red as ‘not a typical New World style, but the truest expression of terroir you could find’. In the Fromm Vineyard near Renwick, in the heart of the Wairau Valley, many clones of Pinot Noir are close-planted on a flat site with alluvial topsoils overlying layers of clay and free-draining gravels. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for 18 months in Burgundy oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Certified organic, the 2016 vintage (4.5*) has a very savoury, slightly earthy bouquet. Showing good but not great intensity, it is plummy, with spice, herb and nut flavours, showing good complexity, gentle acidity and fairly firm tannins.
