Estate-grown at Te Awanga, the highly impressive 2016 vintage (5*) was hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for a year in French oak barrels (26 per cent new). A distinctive wine, it is fragrant, mouthfilling and highly complex, with concentrated grapefruit-like flavours, slightly peachy and toasty, finely integrated oak, good acid spine and a long, tightly structured finish. Well worth cellaring, it should break into full stride 2020+.
