Villa Maria Reserve Barrique Fermented Gisborne Chardonnay (2014)

This acclaimed wine is typically sourced mostly from the company’s Katoa and McDiarmid Hill vineyards. The 2013 vintage (5*) was hand-picked and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (36 per cent new). A lovely wine, it is very elegant and rich, with vibrant, well-ripened, citrusy, peachy flavours, enriched but not dominated by oak, and notable depth and harmony. Already drinking well, it should be at its peak 2016+. The 2014 vintage (5*) was fermented (56 per cent with indigenous yeasts) and matured in French oak barriques (40 per cent new). It’s a sturdy, generous wine with concentrated, ripe stone-fruit flavours, a hint of struck match, excellent complexity and a rich, well-rounded finish. Drink now or cellar.
