Hans Herzog Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Sur Lie (2013)

Far outside the mainstream regional style, the 2013 vintage (4.5*) was estate-grown and hand-picked on the north side of the Wairau Valley. Most of the blend (80 per cent) was fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak puncheons, wood-aged for over a year, and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation; the rest was handled in tanks. Light lemon/green, it is a powerful wine (14.5 per cent alcohol), mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, with rich tropical-fruit flavours, oak complexity, finely balanced acidity, and a dry, harmonious finish. Drink now or cellar. Certified organic.
