De La Terre Hawke’s Bay Barbera (2013)

The 2013 vintage (3.5*) is rare – fewer than 900 bottles were produced. From grapes hand-picked at 25 brix at Havelock North, it was matured for 15 month in seasoned French oak barriques. The colour is fullish, with a hint of development; the palate is sturdy (14.5 per cent alcohol), with strong cherry/spice flavours, hints of tamarillo and nuts, good complexity, and a firm foundation of tannin. A promising debut.
