Esk Valley Winemakers Reserve Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay (2013)

Often one of the region’s most distinguished Chardonnays. The 2012 vintage (4.5*) was grown in three vineyards, at Bay View, Ohiti Road and Maraekakaho (Keltern Vineyard). Hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques (60 per cent new), and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation, it has a complex, smoky bouquet, with substantial body, rich grapefruit-like flavours, lively acidity and a hint of butterscotch. Tight, finely poised and youthful, it’s well worth cellaring. The classy 2013 vintage (5*) was fermented and matured in French oak barriques (40 per cent new). Very elegant and tightly structured, it’s a weighty, rich, very age-worthy wine with a slightly smoky bouquet and deep, grapefruit-like flavours, showing excellent concentration and harmony.
