Elephant Hill Hawke’s Bay Le Phant (2013)

The debut 2012 (3.5*) is Merlot-based, with smaller portions of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Hand-picked in the Gimblett Gravels and the Bridge Pa Triangle, and matured for a year in barrels (20 per cent new), it is full-coloured, with youthful blackcurrant, plum, spice and herb flavours, oak complexity, fine-grained tannins and very good depth. The 2013 vintage (4*) is a blend of Merlot (64 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (15 per cent) and Malbec (21 per cent). Dark and vibrantly fruity, it has strong plum, pepper and nut flavours, ripe, firm and rich.
