Brookfields Hillside Syrah (2013)

This distinguished red is grown on a sheltered, north-facing slope between Maraekakaho and Bridge Pa, in Hawke’s Bay (described by winemaker Peter Robertson as ‘surreal – a chosen site’). The 2013 vintage (5*), matured in new French and American oak casks, has bold, dark, youthful colour. Still a baby, it’s a ‘serious’, structured wine, built to last, with concentrated, plummy, spicy flavours, a hint of liquorice, and a long, finely textured, peppery finish. A powerful, richly varietal red, it needs a long spell in the cellar; open 2018+.
