Botrytis plays a huge part in this wine,’ says Hawke’s Bay winemaker Alwyn Corban. The 2006 vintage (5*) was hand-harvested at 44 brix and fermented and matured for five months in French oak barriques (one and two years old). A golden, abundantly sweet wine (220 grams/litre of residual sugar), with beautifully ripe pear, spice and honey flavours, enriched but not overwhelmed by botrytis, it’s the most finely balanced, exquisite wine yet under this label. There is no 2007 or 2008.
