Weeping Sands Waiheke Island Montepulciano (2011)

The strapping 2010 vintage (5*), grown in the Obsidian Vineyard at Onetangi, is robust (15 per cent alcohol) and opaque. Deliciously rich, flowing and soft, it has great depth of blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours. The lighter (13.5 per cent alcohol), deeply coloured 2011 vintage (3.5*) was barrel-aged (French, 30 per cent new). Fresh and youthful, it is berryish and smooth, with moderately concentrated plum and spice flavours, showing some savoury complexity, and plenty of drink-young appeal.
