Villa Maria Single Vineyard Seddon Pinot Gris (2011)

One of the country’s top Pinot Gris, this Awatere Valley, Marlborough wine is typically sturdy, beautifully scented and intense. The 2010 vintage (5*) was mostly tank-fermented and lees-aged for six months, but 10 per cent was fermented in seasoned French oak barriques. Fleshy, elegant and rich, it has concentrated, very fresh, vibrant and pure pear, lychee and spice flavours, with a dryish (7 grams/litre of residual sugar), lasting finish. The 2011 (4.5*) was hand-picked and fermented in tanks (90 per cent) and seasoned French oak casks (10 per cent). It’s a rich and beautifully harmonious wine, with mouthfilling body (13.5 per cent alcohol) and concentrated, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, slightly sweet (6 grams/litre of residual sugar), ripe and rounded.
