Villa Maria Reserve Marlborough Dry Riesling (2011)

The 2010 vintage (5*), grown mostly (65 per cent) in the Taylors Pass Vineyard, in the Awatere Valley, is a beauty. It’s a classic dry style (in reality off-dry, with 9 grams/litre of residual sugar), with lovely depth of pure, citrusy flavour, minerally, rich and long. The 2011 (4.5*), a blend of Wairau Valley and Awatere Valley grapes, was lees-aged for six months and bottled in an off-dry (7.5 grams/litre of residual sugar) style. It’s still very youthful, with intense, vibrant, citrusy, slightly limey flavours, crisp, finely balanced and long.
