Fromm Malbec Fromm Vineyard (2012)

Estate-grown in Marlborough and matured for 16–18 months in French oak casks (up to 30 per cent new), this wine is recommended by winemaker Hätsch Kalberer for drinking with ‘a large piece of wild venison’. The 2007–2008 vintages, only available in magnums, will be released in 2012, when the winery is 20 years old. The youthful 2009 (5*) is densely coloured, powerful and concentrated, with finely poised, ripe blackcurrant and nut flavours, warm and savoury, and good tannin support. The 2010 vintage (tasted just prior to bottling, and so not rated) is dark, powerful and firm, with highly concentrated, spicy, plummy flavours, lovely fruit sweetness and a long, spicy finish.
