Villa Maria Single Vineyard Southern Clays Pinot Noir (2010)

Hand-harvested in the Ben Morven foothills, on the south side of the Wairau Valley, the richly coloured 2008 vintage (5*) is a lovely, generous red with bold, sweet-fruit characters and plum/spice flavours showing excellent complexity and density. The 2009 (5*) was matured in French oak barriques (24 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it’s an intensely varietal wine, with fresh, densely packed cherry, plum and spice flavours, very refined, supple and long. Tasted prior to bottling (and so not rated), the 2010 vintage is a powerful wine with highly concentrated plum, spice and liquorice flavours, very ripe and rich.
