Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (2010)

The 2001 and subsequent vintages have been exceptional, in a super-charged, deliciously ripe and concentrated style, lush and rounded, that has enjoyed glowing success on the show circuit, here and overseas. The vineyards vary from vintage to vintage, but all are at the cooler, lower end of the Wairau Valley. The wine is handled entirely in stainless steel tanks and drinks best in its first couple of years, while still fresh, zingy and exuberantly fruity. The 2010 vintage (5*) has ripe ‘sweaty armpit’ aromas. Mouthfilling, with vibrant melon, passionfruit and lime flavours, possessing an almost oily richness, it has lovely purity, delicacy and flow, fresh acidity and a long, finely poised finish. It’s not the region’s most complex Sauvignon Blanc, but in terms of sheer pungency, it’s a star.
