Renato Nelson Pinot Noir (2010)

The 2009 (3*) was grown on the coast, at Kina, and on the Waimea Plains. Hand-picked at 24 brix, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (40 per cent new), it’s ruby-hued, with good but not great depth of vibrant cherry/plum flavours, threaded with fresh acidity, and some leafy notes. The 2010 vintage (2.5*) is ruby-hued, with strawberry and spice flavours, hints of herbs and tamarillos, and fresh acidity. It’s still very youthful, with some savoury complexity, but shows a slight lack of ripeness and roundness.
