Wing & Prayer North Canterbury Riesling (2017)

Estate-grown at Swannanoa, north-west of Christchurch, this wine offers irresistible value, from one bottle-aged vintage to the next. The 2017 vintage (5*) was hand-picked from vines over 20 years old, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured on its yeast lees. Bright yellow/green, it is a rich, medium-sweet style (48 grams/litre of residual sugar), intensely varietal, with concentrated, peachy flavours, low alcohol and mouth-watering acidity. Still unfolding, the 2016 vintage (4.5*) is crisp and tightly structured, with strong, citrusy flavours and a long, off-dry (12.6 grams/litre of residual sugar), lemony finish. Best drinking 2024+. Maturing gracefully, the 2015 vintage (5*) is currently very expressive, but will also be long-lived. Bright, light lemon/green, it is scented, with intense, lemony, slightly appley flavours, a sliver of sweetness (10.8 grams/litre of residual sugar) and firm acid spine. A distinctive, vigorous wine, it's a drink-now or cellaring proposition.
