One of New Zealand's most illustrious Chardonnays, Elston is a stylish, intense, slowly evolving wine. At around four years old, it is notably complete, showing concentration and finesse. The grapes are hand-picked from mature vines grown in hillside vineyards above the winery at Havelock North, and the wine is fully fermented in French oak barriques (partly new), with full malolactic fermentation. Bright, light yellow/green, the stylish 2020 vintage (5*) is finely scented, full-bodied and savoury, with rich, ripe stonefruit flavours to the fore, biscuity and mealy notes adding complexity, fresh acidity and a smooth, very harmonious, long finish. Already delicious, it's a drink now or cellaring proposition.
