Pegasus Bay Aged Release Prima Donna Pinot Noir (2012)

A decade old when it was rereleased recently, the 2012 vintage (5*) was grown at Waipara, in North Canterbury. Hand-harvested from the estate's oldest vines, it was matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (40 per cent new). When first tasting it six years ago, I described it as a ‘classy, subtle’ wine, ‘elegant and savoury’, with ‘vibrant cherry/plum flavours, a hint of dried herbs, and excellent depth, complexity and harmony.’ Now, it has deep, mature colour. Full-bodied, it is very savoury, although slightly less fragrant than its rereleased stablemate (Pegasus Bay Aged Release Pinot Noir 2012), with generous, complex flavours, gentle acidity and a well-rounded finish.
