WINE OF THE WEEK Black Estate Home North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2020 ***** This classy, fragrant red was estate-grown at Omihi, matured for a year in seasoned French oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep, bright ruby, it is mouthfilling, with generous cherry, plum and spice flavours, complex, savoury, smooth and lingering. Still youthful, but already delicious, it should be at its best 2025+. Certified organic. $45 ... See MoreSee Less

WHAT I’M DRINKING Chardonnay specialist Tony Bish Wines has released two wines from the low-cropping 2021 vintage. Described as ‘all curves and lusciousness with exceptional sass’, Tony Bish Fat and Sassy Hawke's Bay Chardonnay 2021 (****1/2, $25) is a high impact, upfront style, made with use of barrel fermentation and a softening malolactic fermentation. Bright, light yellow/green, it is full-bodied, with generous, ripe, peachy, slightly toasty flavours, showing considerable complexity, balanced acidity, a creamy texture, and strong drink-young appeal. Tony Bish Heartwood Hawke's Bay Chardonnay 2021 (*****, $35) was hand-picked and fermented and matured in French oak barriques (25 per cent new). Fragrant, weighty and sweet-fruited, it has concentrated stonefruit flavours, biscuity, savoury notes adding complexity, and excellent vigour, harmony and length. A top release of this label, it's priced right and well worth cellaring to 2024+. $35 ... See MoreSee Less
