Vidal Legacy Hawke’s Bay Syrah

Review:

The estate-grown 2016 vintage (5*) was hand-harvested from 18-year-old vines in the Omahu Gravels and Twyford Gravels vineyards, in the Gimblett Gravels, and matured for 20 months in French oak barriques (43 per cent new). Dark and purple-flushed, it is enticingly floral, with lifted plum and black-pepper aromas. Concentrated and vibrantly fruity, it is richly varietal and smoothly textured, with fresh, concentrated plum, berry and pepper flavours, and a long, spicy finish. Best drinking 2021+. Still a baby, the 2018 vintage (4*) is a blend of Syrah (97 per cent) and Viognier (3 per cent), matured for 20 months in French oak casks (49 per cent new). Medium to full-bodied, it is a deep ruby, very vibrant red, with strong plum and spice flavours, some earthy, rustic notes, and savoury characters adding complexity. Best drinking 2022+.
