Te Mata Estate Bullnose Syrah

Review:

Grown traditionally in the Bullnose and Isosceles vineyards, in the Bridge Pa Triangle inland from Hastings, in Hawke’s Bay, this classy red is hand-picked and matured for 15 to 16 months in French oak barriques (40 per cent new in 2018). Unlike its Estate Vineyards stablemate (below), it is not blended with Viognier, and the vines for the Bullnose label are cropped lower. The refined, very youthful 2018 vintage (5*) is the first to include Gimblett Gravels grapes (10 per cent of the blend). Deeply coloured, with a highly fragrant, spicy bouquet, it is mouthfilling and supple, with concentrated, ripe plum and black-pepper flavours, good tannin backbone, and a long finish. Already approachable, it should be at its best 2024+. (The debut 1992 vintage, tasted in late 2019, was past its peak, but fragrant, mellow and still offering a lot of pleasure.)
