Te Mata Elston Chardonnay

Review:

One of New Zealand’s most illustrious Chardonnays, Elston is a stylish, intense, slowly evolving Hawke’s Bay wine. At around four years old, it is notably complete, showing concentration and finesse. The grapes are grown and hand-picked principally at two sites in the Te Mata hills in Havelock North, and the wine is fully fermented in French oak barriques (35 per cent), with full malolactic fermentation. The 2018 vintage (5*) is weighty, rich and rounded. Light lemon/green, it is highly fragrant and finely poised, with deep, ripe grapefruit and peach flavours, integrated oak, and fresh acidity. Powerful yet subtle, it should break into full stride 2022+.
