Rippon Tinker’s Field Mature Vine Pinot Noir

Review:

Named after Rippon’s co-founder, Rolfe Mills (‘Tink’ to his friends), this exceptional wine is based on ‘the oldest vines on the property’. Winemaker Nick Mills describes the typical style as ‘unforced masculinity’. Grown on a north-facing slope at Lake Wanaka, in Central Otago, it is matured for 17 months in French oak barriques (25 per cent new in 2017), and bottled without fining or filtering. The 2017 vintage (5*) is a majestic wine. Deeply coloured, it is mouthfilling and very savoury, with dense, ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours, hints of blackcurrant and liquorice, and fairly firm tannins. A riveting red, it should flourish for a decade.
