Puriri Hills Harmonie Du Soir

Review:

Formerly called ‘Puriri Hills Reserve’, this regional classic has been labelled as ‘Harmonie Du Soir’ since the 2012 vintage. Estate-grown at Clevedon, in South Auckland, it is blended from varying proportions of Merlot (principally), Cabernet Franc, Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, and typically matured for two years in French oak barriques (a high percentage new). The benchmark 2013 vintage (5*) is notably refined, beautifully rich and silky-textured. The lovely 2014 vintage (5*) is a blend of Merlot (42 per cent), Cabernet Franc (25 per cent), Carménère (17 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (8 per cent) and Malbec (8 per cent). A classic claret-style red, still unfolding, it has ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, good tannin backbone, and impressive density and complexity. Already delicious, it’s well worth cellaring to 2023+.
