Review:
Named after Ivan Pope, who planted and tended the vines at this Clevedon, South Auckland vineyard. Still on sale, the 2013 vintage (5*) is a classy blend of Merlot (70 per cent), Cabernet Franc (10 per cent), Carménère (10 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (5 per cent) and Malbec (5 per cent), matured in French oak casks (100 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it has a fragrant, berryish, spicy bouquet, leading into a full-bodied, very approachable wine, with densely packed, complex plum, blackcurrant and spice flavours, savoury and persistent. The very elegant 2014 vintage (5*) is a blend of Merlot (41 per cent), Cabernet Franc (31 per cent), Carménère (18 per cent) and Malbec (10 per cent). Fragrant, rich and still youthful, with deep, bright colour, it is concentrated and finely structured, with concentrated, plummy, spicy flavours, a hint of dark chocolate, and a savoury, silky, long finish. Best drinking 2023+.
