Fromm Clayvin Vineyard Marlborough Chardonnay

Review:

Fromm’s finest Chardonnay is grown on the southern flanks of the Wairau Valley, where the clay soils, says winemaker Hätsch Kalberer, give ‘a less fruity, more minerally and tighter character’. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques, with little or no use of new wood, it is barrel-aged for well over a year. It is a rare wine – only three barrels were produced in 2016 – and top vintages mature well for a decade. The 2016 vintage (5*) is highly refined. Light lemon/green, it is vigorous and youthful, with deep grapefruit and nut flavours, complex and savoury, gentle acidity, and a highly fragrant bouquet. A very ‘complete’ wine with a long finish, it should be at its best 2021+.
