Coal Pit Tiwha Central Otago Pinot Noir

Review:

The silky-textured 2019 vintage (5*) was estate-grown at Gibbston, hand-picked from vines up to 25 years old, and matured for 10 months in French oak casks (28 per cent new). Deep ruby, it is perfumed, mouthfilling and supple, with vigorous, concentrated, well-ripened cherry, plum and spice flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak, and a finely poised finish. Retasted in October 2020, the 2014 vintage (4*) is fragrant, with full, fairly mature colour. Mouthfilling, it has concentrated, ripe cherry and plum flavours, hints of liquorice and dried herbs, and savoury notes adding complexity. (The 2014 has been rereleased at $95).
