Review:
Once described by co-founder James Millton as ‘a stiletto, not a slipper’, Millton’s Chardonnay is based on ungrafted, unirrigated vines, over 25 years old, in the steep, north-east-facing Naboth’s Vineyard in the Poverty Bay foothills. Grown biodynamically and hand-harvested, it is fermented with indigenous yeasts in mostly second-fill French oak barriques, and has usually not been put through malolactic fermentation, ‘to leave a pure, crisp mineral flavour’. Top vintages are powerful, notably stylish and complete. The 2018 vintage (4.5*) is a pale straw, tightly structured, medium to full-bodied wine, with vigorous, youthful stone-fruit flavours, showing very good complexity, and obvious potential.
