Clearview Old Olive Block

Review:

This Hawke’s Bay red is named after the estate vineyard at Te Awanga, which has an old olive tree in the centre. It is grown there and in the Gimblett Gravels. Still youthful, the 2016 vintage (5*) is a deeply coloured blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (63 per cent), Malbec (20 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (17 per cent), matured for 16 months in French oak casks (25 per cent new). Grown principally (70 per cent) in the Gimblett Gravels, it is well worth cellaring, with a fragrant, slightly herbal bouquet and concentrated blackcurrant, herb and spice flavours. Complex, savoury and nutty, it is an elegant, very finely structured red, likely to break into full stride from 2021 onwards.
