Church Road Tom Chardonnay

Review:

This is the pinnacle of Church Road’s Hawke’s Bay Chardonnays – as its price conveys. The 2019 vintage (5*), grown entirely in the Tuki Tuki Valley, is the first to include fruit (28 per cent of the blend) from the company’s Terraces Vineyard, sited further inland than its Tuki Tuki Vineyard (72 per cent). Hand-picked, it was fermented and matured for 11 months on its full yeast lees in French oak barriques (31 per cent new). Still a baby, it has a highly fragrant, smoky bouquet, leading into a mouthfilling, weighty wine with lush, vigorous stone-fruit and nutty oak flavours, showing notable intensity, and a long, dry finish. Best drinking 2024+.
