Church Road Grand Reserve Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay

Review:

This very classy wine sits above the McDonald Series (but below Tom and 1 Single Vineyard) in the Church Road hierarchy. Still very youthful, the 2019 vintage (5*) is a powerful wine, grown mostly in the Tuki Tuki Valley and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels (30 per cent new). Fragrant, with a complex, slightly smoky bouquet, it has rich, vigorous, stone-fruit and toasty oak flavours, threaded with fresh acidity, and a lasting finish. Best drinking mid-2022+.
