Review:
Brookfields’ top red is one of the most powerful, long-lived reds in Hawke’s Bay. At its best, it is a thrilling wine – robust, tannin-laden, and overflowing with very rich cassis, plum and mint flavours. The grapes are sourced from the Lyons family’s sloping, north-facing vineyard at Bridge Pa, and the wine is matured for a year in predominantly new French oak barriques. The youthful 2018 vintage (5*) is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (80 per cent), Merlot (15 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (5 per cent.) Deeply coloured, with a fragrant, slightly herbal bouquet, it is mouthfilling and highly concentrated, with densely packed blackcurrant, red-berry, herb and spice flavours, and a firmly structured, lasting finish. Best drinking 2023+.
