WHAT I’M DRINKING Don’t miss these striking wines, although their high prices may restrict them to special occasions. Odyssey Hera Limited Release Gisborne Chardonnay 2021 (*****, $65), to be released on July 1, is a powerful, lush wine, fermented and matured in French oak casks. Light gold, it is an arrestingly concentrated, savoury and complex wine, with deep, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, rich and well-rounded. Gisborne Chardonnay at its finest, it's already delicious. Passage Rock Generation Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 (*****, $175) is a very powerful Waiheke Island red, described by David Evans, the winery’s co-owner and winemaker, as 'our best wine ever.' Sturdy, with dense, youthful, purple-flushed colour, it reveals bottomless depth of blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, showing lovely ripeness and richness, and good tannin backbone. It should flourish with cellaring for at least a decade; probably two. Open 2027+. ... See MoreSee Less

Fistonich says he is “disillusioned” by last week’s decision, but it will not deter him “from seeking justice for the sale of Villa Maria at an obvious undervalue.” ... See MoreSee Less

WINE OF THE WEEK Smith & Sheth Cru Heretaunga Cabernet Franc 2019 ***** Instantly appealing, this classy Hawke's Bay red is from mature vines in the Bridge Pa Triangle. Fragrant and full-coloured, with substantial body and generous, well-ripened, berryish, plummy flavours, it is very graceful and smooth-flowing. $36 ... See MoreSee Less
